“MaestraPeace” is one mural comprised of several, produced by seven female muralists on two sides of The Women’s Building in San Francisco. The building is located at 3543 18th Street, and is one of the city’s largest murals.
The artist’s name is Eugene Bilbrew (he went by Gene and ENEG and other pseudonyms), an artist from Los Angeles, born in 1923 and is said to have been the first Black fetish career artist. I’m dedicating today’s post to Tagore, by sharing one of his works with you. I would tell you the title, but Tagore didn’t title his works. He wanted the viewers to have an untainted interpretive experience. Very thoughtful.
Tina Allen was a New York born, sculptor who made a name for herself creating a number of large sculptures of Black leaders, paying tribute to our ancestors, so that our “greats” will be remembered.
